As co-founder and president of Highland Capital Management, James Dondero, who resides in Dallas TX, currently oversees Highland’s investment strategies and operations for both retail and institutional products at Highland. Mr. Dondero’s experience in credit markets spans three decades and includes being one of the original pioneers of the Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO).

Funds associated with Mr. Dondero’s management have received numerous accolades and awards throughout his career, including Morningstar’s 5-star designation for Global Allocation in 2014, the Lipper Award for Floating Rate Opportunities in 2014, and Morningstar’s #1 ranked Healthcare Long/Short Equity Fund in 2014.

Before Highland, Mr. Dondero was the chief investment officer for Protective Life’s GIC subsidiary, growing the business from startup to $2 billion within a span of five years. Prior to Protective Life, Mr. Dondero managed approximately $1 billion in fixed income funds for American Express.

James Dondero is a graduate of the University of Virginia with an emphasis in accounting and finance. Mr. Dondero is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA), and has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Additionally, Mr. Dondero serves on the Board of Directors for both MGM Studios and American Banknote. He is also Chairman of the Board for NexBank, Cornerstone Healthcare and CCS Medical Corporation.
